Birds of Iceland

Benedikt Gröndal

Near the end of the 19th century, the eccentric poet, draughtsman and scholar Benedikt Gröndal Sveinbjarnarson (1826-1907) drew every bird ever seen in Iceland. This fundamental work on North Atlantic and Arctic natural history never went to press and was for decades only known to a few enthusiasts. With the publication of Birds of Iceland in two editions, Crymogea has now made Benedikt Gröndal's masterpiece accessible to the public. The edition intended for general trade includes Benedikt Gröndal's text in modern typeface with his illustrations printed in full colour, along with a commentary and an overview of the history of ornithological studies in Iceland in the 19th and early 20th centuries written by scientists at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. A special edition includes a facsimle of the original.
