The Best of Icelandic Press Photopraphy 2008
2008 is one of the most dramatic years in the Icelandic history. After many years of continuous expansion the three largest banks of Iceland collapsed in only a matter of days and the Icelandic society was shaken to the ground. From September 29th to October 9th the Icelandic government overtook the banks Glitnir, Landsbanki and Kaupþing, first by providing funds towards Glitnis stock but the other two on the foundations of new emergency laws. Geir H. Haarde, Iceland ’s prime minister, gave a dramatic address to the Icelandic people, ending in the words “God bless Iceland ”. At that time every man, woman and child knew that the Icelandic nation stood at a crossroad.
The selection of the Icelandic photo journalists’ jury for the best newspaper and magazine photographs in Iceland 2008 was made in light of these dramatic changes. The events of 2008 become vivid, from the struggle between truck drivers and police in April to the Icelandic national handball team victorious return from the Beijing Olymics in August. Above this all are the dramatic photos of the days of destiny in October and November when Iceland was from all over the world pronounced a bankrupt country that might not rise from it’s fall. The demonstrations, the struggle, the egg throws and cries for a total transformation of the society. This history is recorded in a unique way by Icelands most renowned news photographers. Myndir ársins 2008 is a momentum to historical times.
